Thursday, June 25 brings Group E to its decisive third matchday. Germany have already booked their place in the round of 32, but the rest of the group is still wide open: second place, a likely best-third lifeline and a slice of World Cup history are all on the table across two simultaneous kickoffs. Here is your guide, with times in US Eastern Time and only confirmed facts — no predicted scores.

Both Group E games kick off at the same time, as FIFA does for the final round of group matches so that no side can play knowing the other result.

Where Group E stands

After two rounds, Germany sit top on six points and have already qualified, having beaten Curaçao 7-1 in Houston and edged Ivory Coast 2-1 in Toronto with a late winner. Ivory Coast are second on three points, while Ecuador (one point) and Curaçao (one point) prop up the table after a goalless draw between them in Kansas City.

Ecuador vs Germany: the hosts of the group, and a must-win

Germany arrive at MetLife Stadium already through and chasing top spot. A single point would all but guarantee they finish first; even defeat would leave their commanding +7 goal difference hard to overturn. Hansi Flick’s side will want momentum and a clean sheet rather than a scare before the knockouts.

For Ecuador, the maths are brutal but alive: they almost certainly need to beat Germany to keep a top-two finish in their own hands, and even then they will be watching Philadelphia closely. A draw or defeat would leave them reliant on the best-third-placed race in this 48-team field — a route that exists, but one no team wants to gamble on. Expect Ecuador to throw everything forward.

Curaçao vs Ivory Coast: history on one side, qualification on the other

This is the quieter scoreboard but arguably the better story. Ivory Coast, on three points, can seal second place and a knockout berth with a win over Curaçao at Lincoln Financial Field — the same ground where they opened with a 1-0 victory over Ecuador. Anything less and they leave the door ajar.

On the other side stands Curaçao, the smallest nation ever to reach a men’s World Cup. The Caribbean island of roughly 156,000 people — guided by veteran Dutch coach Dick Advocaat and unbeaten across their qualifying campaign — can no longer reach the round of 32. But after grinding out a first-ever World Cup point against Ecuador, Advocaat’s players now chase a first-ever World Cup win. For a debutant nation this size, that would be a result to be told for generations.

What to watch for

  • Germany managing the game, not the result: rotation, fitness and a clean sheet matter more than the margin now they are through.
  • Ecuador’s intensity from the first whistle — they cannot afford a slow start against the four-time champions.
  • Ivory Coast’s nerve against a Curaçao side with nothing to lose and a point already in the bag.
  • The best-third-placed picture, which June 25’s results will help clarify across the wider bracket.
