Canada 1-0 South Africa: Eustáquio Stunner Sends Co-Hosts to First Ever Round of 16
Stephen Eustáquio volleyed home in the second minute of stoppage time as Canada beat South Africa 1-0 at SoFi Stadium to reach the World Cup round of 16 for the first time. Alphonso Davies came off the bench on his tournament debut.
Canada are into the World Cup round of 16 for the first time in their history. A stoppage-time volley from Stephen Eustáquio settled the Round of 32 opener, giving the co-hosts a 1-0 win over South Africa at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and a first-ever knockout victory at a men’s World Cup.
For 90 minutes the elimination opener looked destined for extra time. Then, in the second minute of second-half stoppage time, Eustáquio met a loose ball on the edge of the area and lashed a first-time volley low into the bottom corner, past South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Canada’s bench emptied; manager Jesse Marsch later gathered his squad in a huddle and told them, “You guys are Canadian heroes!”
How the match unfolded
Both nations arrived chasing the same milestone — neither Canada nor South Africa had ever won a knockout match at a men’s World Cup — and the tension showed in a cagey, low-scoring contest.
Canada’s clearest first-half chance came in the 21st minute, when Derek Cornelius rose unmarked to meet a free kick, only for Williams to react low and smother the header off the bounce. The South African captain and goalkeeper kept his side level through a scrappy, physical match in which clear openings were scarce at both ends.
The decisive moment of the day arrived just before the hour-mark in narrative terms when Alphonso Davies was introduced in the 75th minute. The Canada captain had missed the entire group stage with a hamstring injury, and his cameo — his first action of the tournament — gave the co-hosts a late lift that carried into Eustáquio’s winner.
What it means
The win extends a groundbreaking tournament for Canada, who reached the knockout stage after finishing as Group B runners-up behind Switzerland. They now advance to the round of 16 for the first time and will face the winner of Monday’s tie between Morocco and the Netherlands, with that round-of-16 match scheduled for Saturday, July 4 in Houston.
For South Africa, the run ends at the Round of 32. Coach Hugo Broos was gracious in defeat: “We lost the game because there was a lack of power and speed in our team when I compare that with our opponent,” he said, before adding, “We are disappointed, and we wanted to win, but we don’t have to be too much disappointed. What we did was good, and I’m very happy and proud of my team.”
What’s next
The Round of 32 continues on June 29 with a full slate of knockout ties. Canada will watch the Morocco vs Netherlands result closely to learn their round-of-16 opponent.
